HOW TO QUIT YOUR CRUSH

by Amy Fellner Dominy Publication Date: May 4, 2020 Genres: Entangled: Crush, Teen Romance, Young Adult, Contemporary, Enemies to Lovers, Opposites Attract, Romance

SYNOPSIS

Mai Senn knows Anthony Adams is no good for her – no matter how hard she might crush on him. She’s valedictorian; he’s a surf bum. She’s got plans, he’s got his art. Complete opposites in every way. Vinegar and baking soda, they once joked. A chemical reaction that bubbled.

Yeah, they bubbled. Maybe still do.

Good thing Anthony’s got the perfect plan: two weeks to prove just how not good they are together. Whoever can come up with the worst date—something the other will seriously hate, proving how incompatible they truly are—wins.

Like taking a snake-phobe to the Reptile House at the zoo (his idea).

Or a cooking class where they don’t even get to eat the food (her idea).

It’s all about the competition, and it’s meant to help them finally crush their crushes. But it wasn’t supposed to be so hot. Or so fun. And when Mai’s future becomes at stake, will she be able to do the right thing and quit Anthony forever?

Book review: Her Seafaring Scoundrel by Sophie Barnes

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

Synopsis (taken from Amazon listing)

The following review contains some spoilers. I have labeled the part of this review containing parts of the book you should not read if you have not read the book already.

I received a free copy of this book from the author through IndiesagePr.

The last thing she wants is a husband…
Least of all one determined to win her heart…

Lady Cassandra has no desire to marry. But when Captain Devlin Crawford brings scandal to her doorstep and offers salvation, she cannot say no. Not with her daughter’s future at stake. So she decides to accept Devlin’s offer, provided he agrees to never being intimate with her. For although Cassandra is drawn to Devlin, she refuses to dishonor the memory of her one true love.

Devlin knows he’s made a mess, but now that it’s done, marrying Cassandra doesn’t seem like the worst idea in the world. Far from it, though it will take serious effort on his part to convince her of this. Especially since she’s never stopped mourning the man she was meant to marry over a decade ago. So once they set off on a grand ocean voyage, Devlin embarks on his greatest adventure yet – the wooing of his wife.

Review

Her Seafaring Scoundrel was a well written clean romance revolving around the ostracized daughter of an Earl and the rebellious son of a Duke who preferred the life of a sea Captain to the rules and restrictions of the English society. This was a well written slow burn historical romance that sucked you in from the first page. Cassandra was a well-developed complex character, I connected with her from the first scene. I did find her daughter to be too mature for her age but I understood realistically if your mother was shunned by her parents and brought you up in a home for children one would be forced to grow up. The only critique on her daughter was I found her too willing and agreeable to such a sudden change as Devlin uproots their life with his sea journey ahead. I loved the romance and the push and pull from Devlin and Cassandra, I could feel the passion leap off the page when they kissed. The act of making love fell flat for me I needed more detail and it was a few scenes away from being closed door sex. The cover of this book suggested that the book would be partially steamy and this book did not deliver.

I enjoyed reading this book, it was filled with the appropriate amount of humor and suspense, and it was evenly paced. I loved the surrounding characters, and even though I did not read the previous books in this series I got a glimpse of the various personalities of each character.

Spoiler: Do not read any further if you have not read the book.

I enjoyed “Her Seafaring Scoundrel but in the end of the book the fact that Devlin did not immediately choose his wife over his duties of being a Captain brought me down from the high I was on as they confessed that they loved each other. He was willing to leave his pregnant wife, a woman who put aside the guilt she harbored for thirteen years to spend a life with him to the cruel society he tried to save her from. In the end he chose her but I couldn’t forgive him for having that split second indecisiveness, those thoughts should have crossed his mind when he realized that their union wouldn’t be a chaste one.

I did enjoy this book and I look forward to reading more from Ms. Barnes.

Synopsis:

I’m a bookworm, a mathematician, not the kind of girl a hot lobster fisherman would notice.

Until he did.

I’m not in small town Nova Scotia to hook up. I’m here to settle my grandmother’s estate and sell the B&B, which I soon discover has been overrun with seasonal fishermen and operated on the honor system. The hard-core fishing folks become an instant family––the one I never had. Then there’s the blind pet cow, who has a crush on my hot fisherman, Nate. Okay, technically he’s not mine. I have no desire to get reeled in.

Until I do.

Soon, the little town grows on me, and the fisherman? It’s not long until I take the bait and we’re playing house at the B&B. Things are looking up.

Until they aren’t.

Rumors about a new plant and jobs being in jeopardy start swirling around town like a nor’easter, and all the signs point to my guy being behind the scandal. Should I give him enough line to play it out and learn his true intentions, or cut and run before I’m hooked?

Review:

Hooked by you was the first book I ever read from this author and it was an okay read. The story starts with the Kira, a mathematician who bumps into a hot fisherman on her way to sell her late grandmother’s bed and breakfast. The attraction between the two is instantaneous and she wastes no time before inviting him for dinner. Nate Montgomery-Lancaster is a fisherman and the owner of a multi-million dollar company. He is looking for a place to build facilities for his fishing business and Lunenburg is a great place. Nate soon discovers that the B and B he is temporarily staying at is the same B and B the attractive woman he ran into owns the property. They go out to dinner after it’s evident that Kira is not able to cook the dinner she previously promised. It was refreshing to have woman main character who was not automatically great at cooking. I also loved Izzy’s personality, Izzy was a fisherman staying at the B and B with Nate and other fishermen. Ms. Fox knows how to write a sex scene, Nate and Kira’s flirtation brought them to an appropriation resolution. They vowed to enjoy each other with no expectation of a future together. Hooked by you was a sweet funny romantic comedy. The parts I did not like about this book was I felt like Kira felt too comfortable with Nate at first. Spoiler: When Kira burned her dinner and Nate gallantly rescued the oven from the burnt chicken she felt too comfortable chatting with a man she just met in her underwear in the kitchen. The initial meeting of the two love birds also felt forced. I appreciated that they didn’t just fall into bed and I got a glimpse of the personalities of the supporting characters. I think it was original to bring in Bridgette the cow, I love animals in romance. Hooked by you was an okay read, I didn’t connect with the characters. The story is well written and I believe if you’re looking for a quirky romance set in a beautiful small town then this book is for you.

Rating: five out of five stars

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Dinner at Sam’s by DL White is a sequel to Brunch at Ruby’s. Brunch at Ruby’s is also participating in Audible Escape and it’s free to listen to with the subscription. This was my first book from the author and after seeing the beautiful cover I decided to listen.

Dinner at Sam’s is a moderately paced romance with lots of steam and passion. It follows the courtship of attorney Gibson Kincaid and his client Vanessa Jackson. Gibson is an attorney from a prestigious family and Vanessa is real estate agent and single mother trying to make ends meet. Vanessa and Gibson met by chance but as he works on her divorce case a romance blossoms. Vanessa is a beautiful woman with a secret and Gibson is trying to make a difference in the world. The opening chapters gives you a chance to know each character individually. I enjoyed getting to know Vanessa and Gibson, I saw how they interacted with family and the obstacles that prevented them from living a fulfilled life. I enjoyed the flirtation between Vanessa and Gibson, even though they were instantly attracted to each other they got to know each other and the first kiss was worth the wait.

This is not an insta-love story, this is a book with fleshed out characters that fell for each other in a reasonable time period. I loved that the story resolved everything, it gave Gibson the resolution he deserved outside of his relationship with Vanessa.

Dinner at Sam’s was an enjoyable listening experience. The narrator Sharell Palmer’s voice was soothing and she read very eloquently. Ms Palmer’s ability to embody all the characters was impressive and that contributed to the overall great listening experience.

I loved listening to this book and I will be looking forward to listening to more books from this author.

Check out Brunch at Ruby’s. I didn’t listen in order and you can start from the first book.

BEFORE

by Bethany-Kris Publication Date: April 20, 2020 Genres: Adult, Mafia, Organized Crime. Erotic Romance, Novella

Before everything changed … He was just Lev Arsov. Bartender. Occasional illegal fighter. Struggling to get by. Before the world watched … She was just Gigi Parker. Unknown. Fledgling model. Barely making it work. Before he was Pink, the mob enforcer, and she was Gigi Rey, the supermodel, they met by chance. It was only fun. No strings. Two people who didn’t have the first clue how different their lives would soon be. But that was before … Before everything changed. * Before is a free 31k preview of Bethany-Kris’s upcoming 112k standalone Mafia Romance, Pink. Blending in a contemporary beginning with Before, readers are introduced to how it all began for the mob enforcer and his supermodel. Note: Before is also included in Pink.

“Has anybody ever told you that your face should be on magazines?”

Gigi’s head popped up as a laugh burst from her lips. The man that had been working with the girls further down the bar approached her spot at the end, passing by at least twenty other people who gestured with a bit more ferocity at his blatant disregard for their shouts and demands. The white tee he wore stretched across the broad bands of muscle that made up an expansive chest. Rolled up at the sleeves, the fabric tightened to show off the way his strong arms and golden skin, dusted with dark hair, glinted under the pot lights that made up the backdrop of the bar when he placed them in front of her spot on the shiny top.

Black hair, shaved down to a well-groomed buzz, had a blue tint and only added to the sea-color of the stare that flicked over her features and then chanced a glance down at the low dip in the front of her romper. The man had no shame that he was checking her out, but she didn’t really mind all that much, either.

He wasn’t hard on the eyes.

It didn’t hurt to look at him.

Not at all.

And since he seemed content to drink in a good gulp of her, she did the same for him. Standing at least six and a half feet tall behind the bar, he towered higher than even the shelves of liquor behind him. Strong lines made up a face that didn’t have a hint of boyishness anywhere—not in the scruff that dotted a jaw and cheeks carved from stone. He was all man, all over. A thick brow quirked up when her stare slammed back into his, and a sexy grin stretched his thin lips wide to show off the white teeth that made up his smile.

And God.

What a fucking smile it was.

“Well, have they?” he asked.

Gigi had enough sense to swallow before she spoke, lest her next words come out in a girlish rush of hormones and stupidity. It wasn’t often a man could make her tongue-tied, and certainly not by only his approach.

But here she was.

Suddenly, this celebration was looking way better.

“It’s not the first time I’ve heard that line, actually,” she replied.

A laugh burst from his mouth, and yes, she somehow managed to feel that sound all over her body. The noise of the bar began to disappear all around her as the good-looking bartender with a body that looked more suitable to be in the ring than behind the bar leaned in. Edging a bit closer to her, he used his free hand to toss a yellow-checkered bar rag over his broad shoulder.

The action had her swallowing.

Again.

Because she’d noticed his fingers. Their length, the roughness of the digits like he used them a lot, and then their proximity to her when he dared to point one at her.

“But the better question,” he said, “is whether you’ve ever actually been on a magazine, hmm? Something familiar about that face.”

“Really? Because everyone likes to say they’ve never seen one like it.”

Those blue eyes of his blinked.

Then, he smirked.

“Maybe that’s it—never seen anything like it.”

It also wasn’t the first time she had been told that line, either. Except there was something about the way he said it and how his tone dipped at the end. Like his gaze roving down her throat when his tongue peeked out to lick along the seam of his bottom lip.

“Hey, are you gonna get us a fucking drink or—”

The bartender held up one large hand to the left, his palm stopping all of two inches away from the face of a beefy guy leaning across the bar top. “I’m only mixing for front tables tonight—fuck off to the other side of the bar before I move you there.”

Gigi grinned.

He hadn’t taken his eyes off her.

“I’m Gigi,” she said.

He opened his mouth to reply, but the announcer standing at the DJ’s booth just a few feet away from the boxing ring stopped him from saying anything at all when the man’s voice filled the speaker. His attention drifted to the man as he straightened up to his full height, allowing him to easily stare over the crowd of people.

“Next fight—Lev Arsov versus Draven Kinley. Ten minutes to start—one ten-minute round. Betting begins now.”

His gaze came back to her, sharper and sexier than ever. This time, that grin of his was a little more sinful and tempting.

But also dangerous.

“Looks like I’m up next.”

Gigi’s head snapped to the side, and she was sure her face reflected the shock radiating through her gut in that moment. He was just a bartender, right? “What?”

He winked. “Lev Arsov—that’s me. Stick around, Gigi. See what happens next.”

“I was going to ask what you’re doing in New York. Every article I ever see says you live in—”

“Milan, yeah.” Gigi’s gaze darted to his, and a small smile formed on her pretty lips. “Bought a property there a little while back. I’m in New York for work. Fashion Week in September. Some campaigns before that. Never ends.”

“I knew I was right about you.”

Her light laughter had the fire in his chest easing as he admired the way she wasn’t ashamed to grin wide in her happiness. He wondered if the beauty that was presented about her and her life in the magazines was the truth sometimes. It had to be a lonely life to constantly be watched and seen but not really known.

“Did you follow me back here?” she asked.

Unconcerned about letting her know the truth, he nodded. “Yeah—they’re bad news, you know? Those men you’re here with today, I mean. I’m not sure what you were told about today, but—”

“Nothing until I was here. This was all set up around me; I was given a time to show up. That’s how things work in my business sometimes. My time is money, as I’m often told.”

“Really.”

It wasn’t even a question.

Just a heavy understanding.

One he didn’t like at all.

Gigi raised one brow. “What did you mean by that—bad news?”

Them. Their business. Whatever Jensen Todrey thinks he might be able to get from you. It’s all bad news. Without details, he could cause you a lot of problems. Word to the wise—keep away from him, and anything he wants you to do, as much as you can.”

She cleared her throat, shifting from foot to foot and hugging the bomber jacket she’d thrown over a short, flowy dress tighter to her form. “I don’t think my agency would put me in any danger, Lev.”

“Don’t be so sure.”

He wasn’t going to give her all the information he learned today. Not because he couldn’t … but because he wasn’t sure that it was safe to do. Hopefully, if she stayed away from Jensen, then that would be that.

Right?

The buzzing of a phone in Lev’s pocket reminded him that he still had a boss to report back to and soon. Probably tomorrow because he needed to grab his daughter after daycare, too, and he was running out of time to beat the worst of traffic if he lingered too long.

“I gotta run,” Lev told her, “but don’t trust them, Gigi. Please.”

He’d use the exit at the end of the hall to head out of the business and then just round the back and side of the building to where he left his Jeep parked with a meter running.

Before he had the chance to say goodbye, Gigi asked, “Could I see you again? I’m going to be in the city for a while, and if you have time I would love to catch up.”

He should have told her no.

She already had traffickers too close.

Did she really need a mob enforcer around, too?

Lev’s heart raced to speak before his brain could explain why it might be a bad idea—all because looking at her gave him a sense of nostalgia that he had never felt before. She looked at him differently than most people did; she saw a man she had known from a time before.

And that time came before he was this man.

Pink.

So yeah, he should have said no.

Instead, he said, “Yeah, there’s a bar I like where we could meet up in the next couple of days … it’s private, and you probably need that, right?”
